GMAIL !!!
What is Gmail ?
Gmail is a free, search-based e-mail (Web mail) service, which is accessible from a Web browser anywhere in the world. On the 1st of April 2004(April Fool's day), Google the successful search engine (and media) company, announced their free email service with an astronomical 1GB of storage space. Other top email services like Yahoo and Hotmail were offering only 2-4 MB space at that time. Even though the service was free, one needed to get special Gmail invites to create an account. A few days before the Valentine's Day in 2007, Gmail was opened to all Internet users. You no longer need a special invitation to create a Gmail account.
Note: Gmail is known as Google Mail in the United Kingdom and Germany.
Gmail competition :
Soon Yahoo and Hotmail also increased the size of the mailbox. But that was still very less in comparison to the Gmail.
Yahoo : 4MB--->100MB--->250MB--->1GB and finally In May 2007, as part of their anniversary celebrations, Yahoo! announced "unlimited" storage space for all email accounts.
Hotmail : 2MB--->25MB--->250MB
The popular Indian portal, Rediff, announced 1GB of storage for rediffmail users.
Gmail features :
* Spam Filtering : Most email services offer some sort of spam filtering these days, but Google's is one of the more effective. In fact, in two years of using Gmail, I've seen fewer spam messages in my inbox, compared to other email accounts and I've never had a legitimate email get flagged as spam. Less spam users, say that less spam is one of the top reasons that they love Gmail.
* More storage space : Over 7 GB (and growing) of free storage so you will never need to delete another message.
* Cost : Its absolutely FREE !!!
* Uptime : Google will have a higher uptime.
* Speed: To couple the huge storage space which lets you keep thousands of emails, you need fast access and download. Gmail runs off many web servers so that all users can get to work without wasting precious time. Gmail has two versions - the standard view and the basic HTML view; the latter is most suited for surfers on slower internet connections. The absence of flashy image ads (really annoying) also helps in quicker access.
* Large file attachments and thumbnail views : The email attachment size which was 10MB at the time of launch is now 25MB. Attached image files are generally displayed as thumbnails sparing you the trouble of downloading large photos.
* Gmail access and integration : Gmail provides features like email forwarding, POP3 and IMAP access, which most email services either don't have or carry a price tag are offered free on Gmail. Thus, you can configure your Gmail account in your email client(like MS Outlook).
* Mobile access : Read Gmail on your mobile phone by pointing your phone’s web browser, it is mentioned on the website especially.
* Multiple Languages: You can view the Gmail interface in many different languages. To know more, read how to change the language in Gmail account.
* Google Services : Also you can use the same Gmail account to other Google services like adsense, adwords, orkut blogger and so.
* Virus Protection : Google also offers virus filtering. You cannot turn this service off, and it prevents you from sending an executable file as an attachment. This limits some of what you can do with a Gmail account, but it probably prevents more mischief than it causes.
* Integration With Google Talk : Gmail shows your Google Talk contacts on the left-hand side of the screen, so you can tell who is available and use Talk to instant message them rather than sending email, if you choose.You can even start a voice or video chat using this integration.
You can also archive your Talk transcripts and store them within Gmail, if you use Google Talk or Gmail as your Talk client.
* Google Search Engine : The backbone of Gmail is a powerful Google search engine that quickly finds any message an account owner has ever sent or received.
*Grouped Messages : This is probably my favorite feature. Whenever you receive an E-mail, GMail will group it together with all related forwards and replies, allowing you to track the entire conversation together in one E-mail.
Google continues to improve this feature, recently adding two nice enhancements. You can now click Forward All to forward the entire conversation to someone. Google has also helped you avoid sending duplicate replies by adding a pop up window which lets you know if a new E-mail came in related to the conversation you are typing a reply to, so you know to update the conversation before clicking reply.
* Labeling System : Instead of the folder system of traditional E-mail systems, Google offers their flexible filing system using Labels. You can label an E-mail, allowing it to work like a folder. The advantage of this method is you can add more than one label to an E-mail, where as you can only put an E-mail in one folder.
Does Gmail Put Advertisements on Messages?
Gmail is sponsored by AdSense ads. These ads appear on the side panel of mail messages when you open them from within Gmail. The ads are unobtrusive and computer matched to keywords within the mail message.
Unlike some competitors, Gmail does not put ads inside messages or append anything to your outgoing mail. There are no pop-ups or untargeted banner ads in Gmail, which places relevant text ads and links to related Web pages adjacent to e-mail messages. Google also assures everyone that ads are placed by computer, not by humans.
